Naming your child is the first major decision you make as a parent. So do you choose a unique name you’ve never heard before? What about a traditional family name? There are so many options for baby names, and sometimes it can be hard to choose. Here are some of the top baby name trends of 2013 so far!
Sophia has been gaining popularity for a few years, while Emily held the top spot for girls for a number of years, but has since disappeared from the top five. But Emily will never be Mary, which held the number one spot for girls from 1913 to 1946. Emma now holds the top trend, which means “universal” and originates from Latin.
As for the boys, Jacob hovered in the top spot for fourteen years, but is slowly sinking in popularity, being over taken by Noah and Ethan. Ethan is making a steady increase, going from the fifth rank in the early 2000’s to fourth in 2006, 5th in 2007 and 2008, and second in 2009 and 2010. But just like the girls, the boy’s names don’t quite compare yet to the most popular boy name, Michael, which held the top spot from 1961 to 1998. Right now, Liam is holding the most popular spot, which means “Strong-willed warrior”, and originates from Irish culture.
Keep in mind that if you want to incorporate a family name into your baby’s name, but feel like it’s a little bit old fashioned or doesn’t fit with what your spouse or family wants, you can always decide to use a family name for your baby’s middle name. Baby names are an important decision, whether you go with the most recent trends, a family name, or just a name that holds a special place in your heart!
